Blanco became friends with Gomez’s ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber in 2009, a year before Bieber and Gomez started dating for the first time. He has worked with Bieber and a variety of artists Gomez knows, including her other ex-boyfriend The Weeknd and her friend Camila Cabello.

To promote the album, their first joint interview for Interview Magazine with Mel Ottenberg was released the same day. In the revealing discussion, the engaged couple revealed a lot about their life together, including how Gomez’s marquise diamond engagement ring game to be and some early thoughts regarding their wedding.
After Ottenberg asked to see the ring, Blanco commented, “She’s spectacular.”
Gomez jumped in, saying, “She’s a marquise. Ever since the ‘Good for You’ days—that was, gosh, so many years ago—that’s the diamond I’ve always dreamed of.”

Sneak around and try to do this perfect thing without me knowing.’ At the end, she was starting to get upset because she was like, ‘Why aren’t you coming home tonight?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, I’m just at my friends.’ I almost did it early. But I nailed it, I think.”
Throughout the interview, a few thoughts about their wedding came up. When Ottenberg asked if Gomez planned to convert to Judaism, Blanco laughed and Gomez said it wasn’t in her plans.
“We want our kids to have both of our values, both of our morals,” Blanco added.
But when asked if they would dance the traditional hora at the wedding, he said, “Of course we will.”
As for planning a destination wedding, Gomez said: “Honestly, we haven’t even gotten that far. We want to be so happy right now in this moment…But I don’t know. That might be hard for family.”

That same day, Blanco posted a video of his Valentine’s Day gift to Gomez, remarking she’s “not much of a flowers girl.” The camera follows a trailer of tortilla chips to a giant nacho cheese surprise, filling an entire tub. The chips spell out “I heart u.”

Actress Scarlett Johansson also bore witness to the relationship between Gomez and Blanco, as she revealed during a gossip session backstage at the Dolby Theatre with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelo.
Ripa asked Johansson if she’d caught “any gossip” from her spot in the audience and luckily she was seated right beside the adorable couple.
“Well, I’m sitting next to Selena and Benny and I have to say… I’m seeing a lot of very cute, honeymoon-phase cuteness happening,” she explained, smiling.

The couple spoke in a Rolling Stone interview about the state of their wedding planning. Blanco quipped, “I think every day she’s planned a new wedding in her head. We’re very much ‘take it one day at a time’-type of people. We’re still not over this moment. Literally, while you were talking, she was sitting there staring at her ring.”
Gomez added more seriously that their focus is on their album, I Said I Love You First. “I genuinely feel like this is such a special time that we get to apply it to this album and really just pour our heart into it, and completely translate what we feel and bring it to the world,” she said. “That’s my main focus right now, at least.”
Blanco said they were enjoying being engaged: “It feels like we got engaged yesterday, but also feels like we got engaged 20 years ago. Gomez and Blanco revisited the story of their first kiss during their recent appearance on Table Manners With Jessie and Lennie Ware. This time, though, they added a surprising new detail: that Gomez developed a rash immediately after because she had been so nervous.
Blanco set the scene for how that milestone moment transpired, revealing that toward the end of their second date, “We were just sitting in the living room on the couch. And we were playing We’re Not Really Strangers. And there was a thing where it said, ‘Take a selfie with the person next to you.’ And we were already kind of like lounging, and she got right on my chest and took a selfie. And then right after, I just looked at her and I said, ‘Oh, I gotta kiss this girl.’ And I kissed her right away.”
“It was a very good kiss,” Gomez added.
Blanco asked for permission to talk about the rash. Then he revealed, “And right away…her heart started beating so quickly, and she started getting a rash on her face. And she was so nervous because she hadn’t, you know—”
Gomez jumped in and explained, “I hadn’t liked anyone in a very long time. So some kisses are for fun. And then when you feel something behind a kiss, it’s completely different. And I’d been alone for about five years, with the exception of a few shitty dates here and there, but never felt that way. And I was a little embarrassed, but he was like, ‘Are you okay?’ And ‘I was like, no, no, I’m fine.’” She admitted, “I didn’t want to be like, ‘I like you. I really like you’ [that soon].”
Things still took off from there. “Right after that, we just started hanging out so much, and it felt so natural,” Blanco said. “It felt like, you know when people—this is so corny. You know when people are like…‘when you know, you know’? And you know, I…thought when I was younger, like, ‘Oh, this could be the person,’ but there was just a feeling that I never had before [with Selena] where I said I’ve never felt so comfortable yet so on my toes at the same time. Every day I was with her, I was so excited for what was gonna happen, but also so at ease with everything. Anytime I’m feeling anxious, she knows how to calm me down. But if anytime I’m revved up, she can match my energy. And I was like, ‘Wow, I really truly met my soulmate.’”

Blanco admitted in a May 2 interview on Nova’s Ricki-Lee, Tim and Joel that he and Gomez did butt heads while writing their collaborative album, I Said I Love You First. Luckily, it was easily resolved.
Host Ricki-Lee Coulter asked about what conflicts came up in the process of creating music together.
“Honestly, she’s so easy,” Blanco shared. “When we first started making it [the album], if anything starts to feel weird, we’re stopping this immediately, and it never did.”
The one thing that came between them was an outside influence.
“The biggest thing we got in to was about birds,” Blanco said, explaining that when they recorded in a spare bedroom, Gomez complained about birds chirping outside the windows.
“For some reason there was a nest of birds that were right outside the window where she was recording,” he said. “I never heard it because whenever I walked in the birds didn’t make noise.”
Gomez got annoyed that Blanco didn’t ever hear what was bothering her as she was trying to sing, but she eventually got the birds on tape.
“It was frustrating,” he said. “Finally she got it on wax, it picked up on the mic and I finally heard it. It made me realize, ‘Oh shoot, we’re really meant for each other,’ because we’re not the arguing type. We’re not like yellers, we just kind of talk everything out. We have really good communication skills.”
