The residents of the Arconia should brace themselves for more criminal activity on the premises—Only Murders in the Building has been renewed for a fifth season at Hulu. The Wrap reported the news just a week after the show’s season 4 premiere in September 2024; it couldn’t even wait until the finale.

“We’ve been keeping that a secret for about a week and a half now. It’s very exciting,” showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap on September 4. “We’ve been in the writers room for season 5 for two weeks now. So it’s pretty fast and we’re already in.”

Season 5 will be comprised of 10 episodes, but further info, such as plot details, remain under wraps.

The early(ish) renewal proved that the comedy starring Steve Martin (Charles), Martin Short (Oliver), and Selena Gomez (Mabel) is perhaps too star-studded and too delightful to fail. It has earned 49 Emmy nominations so far, according to Deadline, with 21 nods for season 3 alone. In July 2024, Gomez received her first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. And in February 2025, the cast won a SAG Award for Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Season 4, which premiered on Aug. 27, 2024, was perhaps the series’ most ambitious yet, as the leading trio headed to Hollywood for a potential movie adaptation of their true-crime podcast. But negotiations come to a standstill when Charles’s body double Sazz (Jane Lynch) goes missing. The mega-watt list of guest stars included Meryl Streep, Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, Kumail Nanjiani, and more. If season 5 continues the trend, we can’t wait to see what talent OMitB scoops up next.

What will Only Murders in the Building season 5 be about?

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Historically, the finale episodes have ended on a cliffhanger that teases the central mystery (read: murder) that will be at the center of the following season. The season 4 finale continued that trend: Charles, Mabel, and Oliver are strolling in the Arconia courtyard when they find a pool of blood—and a dead body—in the fountain. It’s Lester’s, the building’s sweet elderly doorman. The last time the trio saw Lester (Teddy Coluca), he was sweeping outside Charles’s apartment. We can assume the trio will spend the upcoming season looking into the circumstances around his death.

But the season 4 finale dropped another hint, too. A mysterious woman named Sofia Caccimelio (Téa Leoni) approaches Charles and Mabel in the Arconia, offering to hire them to investigate the death of her husband, Nicky. (She offers to pay generously, too.) While they turn down her offer, her dramatic exit seems to mean that this won’t be the last we see of her. Will the OMITB gang eventually take up her offer in season 5?

Showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap that “Season 5 will hit on some very current things going on within New York, specifically very relevant things that are happening in the city right now, in ways that honestly we couldn’t have even predicted. We built our story and then certain things revealed themselves, and vice versa. We found out certain things, we were hearing whispers about certain things and it’s a little bit more reflective, deeply New York, both historically and the modern New York right now too.

“The show has always been classic meets modern. So that is carried through again in a very, very big way within the next season. Another wildly funny world for our group to get thrown into is all I will say.”

Who is in the season 5 cast?

In addition to Gomez, Martin, Short, and Michael Cyril Creighton (Howard), we’re expecting to see more stars join the show, like in last season. To start, Keegan-Michael Key has been cast in a recurring role, but details about his character are still under wraps, per Deadline. Renée Zellweger was also cast in a still-secret role, according to the outlet. On April 5, it was announced that Logan Lerman had been added to the cast as well. That same day, Gomez shared a post on Instagram of her life lately, including a shot on set with that cast featuring both Zellweger and Lerman.

Meryl Streep will reprise her role as Loretta too. The Oscar winner and Selena Gomez announced the news in a video where they recreate a scene from The Devil Wears Prada. When asking if Streep would return for season 5, Gomez interrupts her saying, “No, no, no. That wasn’t a question.” Watch below.

When will season 5 come out?

It’s still too early to say. In an interview with TheWrap that published Oct. 29, 2024, showrunner John Hoffman said they’re “in the middle of breaking Episode 4 of Season 5 right now.”

In early March 2025, the show announced that production had officially begun.

Has filming for season 5 started?

Production began around March 2025, just as showrunner John Hoffman planned.

On June 9, Selena Gomez was spotted filming scenes for season 5 in NYC’s Upper West Side. The actress arrived to set in a preppy look consisting of a navy blazer, brown striped skirt, tights, and navy knee-high boots. Later, while filming scenes, she switched it up and changed into an all-black look, wearing a black trench coat, black leggings, a black hoodie with a gray shirt underneath, and mid-calf black boots.

Has production wrapped yet?

Yes! On June 17, the Only Murders Instagram account posted a behind-the-scenes video that captures their last day of filming. The caption reads, “That’s a wrap on Season 5! 🎬 Thank you to our incredible cast and crew for a fantastic production. New mystery coming soon… ⛲️ #OMITB

The video shows stars Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Michael Cyril Creighton, and Téa Leoni, along with new cast members Logan Lerman and Renee Zellweger.
