You might look at a photo of Victoria Beckham and marvel at her nonexistent pores, her perfectly even complexion, or her smooth-as-butter skin. But her face hasn’t always been so flawless. “I’ve struggled with my skin,” she says. “I don’t now, but I used to. I’ve had childhood, teenage, [and] adult acne.” Because of this, she’s always leaned on foundation in her beauty routine. For Beckham, finding the right one has been like Goldilocks trying to discover the perfect porridge. One is too cakey. One is too oily. None have been just right—until now, since she’s taken it upon herself to launch her very own formula: the Foundation Drops in collaboration with Augustinus Bader, available on September 3.
“Foundation has been a dream of mine since I first started Victoria Beckham Beauty,” she shares. “I originally wanted it to be the first product I produced, but it’s such a competitive category. I wasn’t ready for it. This has been on my mind and heart, and we’ve been working on it for longer than I can remember.”
Ahead, Beckham talks about how she finally launched her dream foundation, the beauty techniques she’s carried with her since childhood, and the one product she won’t even let her husband, David, see her without.
Why did you want to create a foundation so badly?
I get photographed a lot, and the perfect foundation was always the one product I couldn’t find. I’ve never found [one with] the correct amount of coverage, and that treats and doesn’t irritate my skin. A lot of brands claim to have skin care benefits in their foundation—which they do—but I wanted to take it to another level. Augustinus Bader [skin care], in my opinion, is the best. I like to collaborate with the best. People don’t need more product unless there’s a real reason why. I believe there is nothing else like this.
I’ve wanted this my entire life—genuinely, since I was way too young to be wearing makeup. I wore this foundation throughout filming my [upcoming] docuseries, [Victoria Beckham], on the red carpet, and in photo shoots. Looking back at those pictures, it really satisfies me. I’ve tested it in London, where the climate is completely different from Miami in August, when it’s incredibly humid.
What’s your favorite way to apply foundation? Do you have any tricks?
I like to build it up with a brush. It depends on what I’m doing—whether I want full coverage or just to even out my skin tone. You have to shake the bottle to activate the ingredients, and I love how it builds. It’s not too thick or cloggy, and it doesn’t settle into pores or fine lines. It gives a very natural finish, but it’s enough. I don’t think foundation has to be thick and heavy to perfect your complexion. You don’t need a heavy, old-fashioned formula.
Do you remember the first foundation you ever used?
I don’t remember what it was, but I can honestly say there isn’t a single foundation on the market that I haven’t tried.
Do you still use any beauty techniques from when you were younger?
Absolutely. When I was younger, my mom used to pull her lipstick out of her dressing gown pocket before I went to school and dab some on my cheeks because my skin was a little sallow in the winter. That’s how we came up with Cheeky Posh.
I’ve worked with the best makeup artists in the industry for many years, and those tips stick with me. That’s why I love doing my tutorials and communicating with my community—to share those tricks. I still work with makeup artists now, and I’m always learning new ones. I think that’s what people like about my tutorials. I’m a girl’s girl. When I get a good tip, I want to share it and show how easy it is.
What’s one of the more recent tips you’ve picked up?
I don’t sit in the sun, but I love that flushed, sun-kissed look you get after too much time outside. I used to sunbathe and burn, but now I avoid it completely. Still, I like that effect.
I take Colour Wash and either use my fingers or a brush to dab it on the tops of my cheeks and across the bridge of my nose, so it looks like I’ve had a little too much sun. I’ll also add a touch to my eyelids and lips as a stain. That’s the newest tip I have—looking sun-kissed while staying in the shade.
I saw you cut your hair short recently. How are you liking it?
I love to just try new things.
Well, it looks great. What won’t you leave the house without?
BabyBlade. Not only do I not leave the house, I don’t leave my bedroom without it. Even my husband doesn’t see me without my eyebrows on. I’m eyebrow obsessed.
