Though events and presentations have been slowly trickling in, today Michael Kors kicked off the official start of New York Fashion Week. Members of the industry and celebrities alike gathered this morning in a glass- and brick-walled room at Terminal Warehouse, a favorite of major brands since NYFW decamped from Tribeca a few years prior. At this always-buzzy slot on the schedule, many familiar faces made an appearance, including Suki Waterhouse, Lisa Rinna, Olivia Wilde, Leslie Bibb (and her bob), and Lili Reinhart. The cast was no different: Alex Consani, Anok Yai, and Frankie Rayder returned, with Rayder closing the show.
As the first models rounded the corner, the dressed guests, setting, and collection seemed to melt into a pot of earthy hues with intermittent golden lamé or sequins. Brown, black, and white ensembles utilized texture, like sheer harem pants or a fringed skirt, to add a touch of depth to the more tonal take on a soft spring palette. The seasonal transition came from the clothing’s feel—as light as a feather. (With Ralph Lauren’s white blazer-filled off-schedule runway show yesterday, breeziness is already a burgeoning trend of the week.)
With such demure silhouettes, the styling took charge—and this season, statement pieces are back and better than ever. Metal pendant necklaces should be large enough to reflect light off you. Crinkled leather bags can be folded as a clutch, instead of worn crossbody. Even better, forgo the bag completely, and wear your wallet on a long strap around your neck. Big, chic, and kooky accessories are all the rage, and wallet necklaces are only the beginning.
