The Summer I Turned Pretty, based on the books by Jenny Han (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before), has quickly become a cultural phenomenon. The series follows Isabel “Belly” Conklin (Lola Tung) who finds herself in a sticky love triangle with her childhood friend Conrad (Christopher Briney) and his younger brother Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). The third season, originally planned as the series finale, is now streaming on Prime Video, but fans are still eager for more of the story. Ahead, here’s everything we know about the future of TSITP.

Will there be a season 4 of The Summer I Turned Pretty?

Unfortunately, no—but for good reason. The series is based on Jenny Han’s trilogy of novels (The Summer I Turned Pretty, It’s Not Summer Without You, and We’ll Always Have Summer). Each season of the show likely corresponds to a book in the series, so with three books in total, it makes sense that the show would end at season 3.

In an interview about the series finale, Han elaborated on her three-season plan. “Doing what I think is best for the story has always been my north star, and the story to me fit for these three seasons,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “I appreciate that [the studio] respected that. To be able to say when, to be able to call it, is rare when something is doing well and making people money. But I have to be true to myself and what I think is best for the story.”

But wait—what about a spinoff?

Han has said that she’s open to exploring more of TSITP universe, whether that’s an eventual sequel or even a spinoff series.

“Never say never,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I never do. If the story is there, then I’m there. As a storyteller, you just get hit with inspiration all the time. If I had a really great idea that I was excited by, that I wanted to keep telling the story, and if [the stars] were excited to do it, then I would be so pumped. It really depends on if I feel like there is more story to tell.”

She continued, “I love working with all these guys, that’s at the core of it. I would always welcome working with them on this, or something else. Who knows what the future holds?”

In a separate interview with LA Times, Han added: “But it has to feel like genuine excitement for me, because showrunning is 24/7, 365 days a year. I feel I have to be there every day to make sure I can stand behind it. I’m definitely open to doing more stories in the universe, it’s just that I want to figure out what the story is that I feel so compelled to tell it that I’m willing to spend the next few years throwing my whole body into it.”

Tung shares Han’s love for the cast, and would also be open to returning should the opportunity ever arise. “I love working with this group of people and I love working with Jenny,” she said. “I think it’s such a privilege to be any part of her cinematic universe, so if I was ever asked, I’m there.”
