To find the best picks, the ELLE beauty team started by combing through hundreds of options, from a microneedling alternative that uses high-pressure jet technology to an hourglass-shaped hair dryer specifically designed to diffuse curly hair. Then, we tasked 28 ELLE staff members with testing out the most promising entries and detailing their experiences. Would they use this tool or get this treatment again? Would they pay for it themselves? Would they recommend it to a friend? On a scale of one to 10, how much did it hurt? How did their results compare to everything else they’ve tried?

December 2024 to February 2025: The ELLE beauty team compiled data on new and innovative tools or treatment launches while keeping note of the existing tools and treatments that remain a gold standard.
February 2025: The ELLE beauty team asked brands to send formal submissions to our awards to be considered (we never charge for submissions).
March 2025 to April 2025: We recruited 28 ELLE staffers to test hundreds of tools and in-office treatments.
April 2025 to May 2025: ELLE staffers were asked to honestly evaluate tools and treatments based on criteria including efficacy, ease-of-use, pain, and innovation.
May 2025: ELLE staffers submitted their detailed feedback to the beauty team for review. We compiled all of the info, including exactly why our staffers liked each tool or treatment.
June 2025: We analyzed this feedback to find 70 winners for our second annual Tools and Treatments Awards.
