Outlander’s extended seventh season has come and gone, but the story of Claire and Jamie’s epic romance isn’t over yet. The Starz series has one more season to go, and fans are unsurprisingly eager to know every last detail about the show’s conclusion. Luckily, the stars and production team have had plenty to share about Outlander’s next and final season.
Here’s what we know so far about Outlander’s final chapter.
Is Outlander season 8 confirmed?
Starz confirmed the show would be filming for another season in January 2023. In a statement, Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming for the network said, “For nearly a decade Outlander has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion…We’re thrilled to continue to partner with Matthew, Maril and Ronald and can’t wait to see where their alluring storytelling takes us next.”
Will season 8 be the last season of Outlander?
Yes. Starz promises a “thrilling, emotional farewell to the groundbreaking series” while promoting season 8.
Executive producer Maril Davis previously hedged finale speculation in 2020 by saying, “We’ll keep making this until Claire and Jamie are a hundred. Honestly, we will. There’s still many more books to go. And if Starz and Sony are willing, we’re willing, and if the actors are willing, we’ll keep going.”
But it does appear to be a sign-off, based on the promotional materials and posts from the cast while season 8 was in production.
What will season 8 of Outlander be about?
Outlander’s seventh season was based on Diana Gabaldon’s seventh book in her Outlander series, An Echo in the Bone. Season eight is supposed to be an adaptation of her eighth novel, Written in My Own Heart’s Blood. Gabaldon just finished the series’s ninth book, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. She is supposed to be working on her tenth book.
With all that material, and with some deviations between the books and the series, the next season could cover a lot. But the novels show Jamie and Claire embroiled in the American Revolutionary War. Meanwhile, Brianna, Roger and their son have their own challenges in the 20th century, after facing off against the villain Rob Cameron throughout season seven. They will also probably be some exploration of the reappearance of Jamie and Claire’s firstborn, Faith, believed to have been stillborn.
Who will be in season 8 of Outlander?
Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe are obviously going to return as Jamie and Claire alongside Sophie Skelton’s Brianna and Richard Rankin’s Roger. Lauren Lyle will likely return as Marsali, as well as César Domboy as Fergus.
There will also be new cast members, including Kieran Bew as retired British soldier Captain Charles Cunningham, and Frances Tomelty as his mother, Elspeth Cunningham. Carla Woodcock is joining as Amaranthus Grey.
How many episodes will Outlander season 8 have?
Starz confirmed there would be 10 episodes.
Has production started?
Starz announced in late September 2024 that filming had wrapped.
“Words cannot express the gratitude owed to each and every hard-working cast and crew member who brought this incredible series to life and every single fan who supports it with passion, creativity, and dedication,” they wrote in an Instagram post. “Outlander really is more than just a show, it’s a family, and while filming might be ending, there’s so much more to this journey that’s just beginning.”
Throughout the filming, there were other updates. Balfe and Heughan even shared pics from the emotional final read through.
When will Outlander season 8 be released?
In July 2025, at Comic-Con International, Starz announced the final season will premiere in early 2026.
